ADDITIONAL PROCEDURES FOR IDENTIFYING CHILDREN WITH SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITIES [34 CFR §300.307] Option 1 1. The education agency will use the state-adopted criteria for determining whether a child has a specific learning disability through a process based on the child’s response to scientific, researchbased intervention in conformity with IDEA Regulations §300.307-311. Revised: April 11, 2008 15 Option 2 2. The education agency will use a criteria for determining whether a child has a specific learning disability through the identification of a severe discrepancy between intellectual ability and achievement in conformity with IDEA Regulations §§300.307-311. Option 3 3. The education agency will determine, on an individual child basis, the criteria for determining whether a child has a specific learning disability using one of the following criteria in conformity with §§300.307-311: a. The state-adopted criteria based on a child’s response to scientific, research-based intervention; b. The identification of a severe discrepancy between intellectual ability and achievement.

This project has two major goals: (a) to recruit, prepare, and retain a sufficient number of special education teachers and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to meet the need of a rapidly growing special education population; and (b) to improve early literacy/reading and math skills for students with disabilities by using Standards-Based Reform (SBR) practices within a Response to Intervention (RTI) framework.

- Arizona Response to Intervention (RTI) Self-Assessment (pdf)
- This form produced by the Arizona Department of Education in 2009 is a self-assessment intended to assist schools and districts in determining their initial readiness for implementing RtI to meet the learning needs of all students. The self-assessment addresses five areas of implementation—Leadership, Assessment, Curriculum, Instruction, Data Based Decisions, Integration and Sustainability—by providing an indicator and asking schools and districts to determine a rating and describe evidence of implementation.

- This brief produced by the Arizona Department of Education describes the three-tiered model in Arizona’s RtI framework. Each tier is described in detail and includes a chart listing the component (e.g., curriculum, support) and instruction (e.g., Arizona Academic Standards, additional tutoring before/after school) that should occur. This resource would be useful for school and district administrators, teachers, and related service providers planning and implementing a tiered system of instructional support for students.
